The Bathing Place of the Late Keraton’s Noble Family in Warungboto Site
Pesanggrahan Warungboto is located in Warungboto Village, Umbulharjo, Yogyakarta. Warungboto Site or Pesanggrahan Rejowinangun is one of several pesanggrahan built in the era of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono II.
This site is called Pesanggrahan Rejowinangun because one of the macapat songs tells the story of Sultan Hamengku Buwono II who called Pesanggrahan Warungboto as Pesanggrahan Rejowinangun. This site was built in 1785.
This Pesanggrahan Rejowinangun building became a place to rest. In addition, it also became a fortress on the east side of the Ngayogyakarta Palace.
Like any other temples, Pesanggrahan Rejowinangun also has a pond in the center. This pond became a cleaning facility for the royal family in which there was a “tuk” or spring with a garden built on the site inside the compound.
The water coming out of the “tuk” was collected in the pond and then used as a bathing facility for the king and family. However, this spring is no longer flowing, so the pond has dried up.
Inside the guest house there are also several other rooms. These rooms serve as a place to change clothes.
There is also a room called “mikhrab” which is located to the west of the pool building where there is a spring. The room serves as a place to pray.
In the corner of the north and south sides of the building there is a tall building or a kind of viewing platform. At that time, the building was used as a place to look out for enemies.
Initially, Pesanggrahan Rejowinangun was built using bricks without any wooden structure. This building has very thick walls typical of old buildings whose uniqueness still remains today.
However, the building was once damaged due to the natural disaster of the earthquake that hit Yogyakarta on May 26, 2006. The earthquake caused the Warungboto Site to suffer damage and several building structures collapsed.
The site then underwent revitalization until it finally became a tourist attraction open to tourists. After the revitalization in 2015 until December 2016, this site began to be visited by many tourists.
Pesanggrahan Rejowinangun, which was built by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono II, has many rooms. The estate is also divided into two, east of the Gajah Wong River and west of the Gajah Wong River. The two buildings are then connected by a bridge that cuts the Gajah Wong River which has a flow to the south.
In the building drawing, the location of the gate is on the east side of the Gajah Wong River which is marked by the Manuk Beri gate. However, due to changes in time and era, the building on the east side was displaced by residential areas. This leaves the building on the west side of the Gajah Wong River which is still preserved today.
In Babad Momana, it was built by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono II, who at that time he was still serving as Adipati Anom Amangku Negara because at that time the government was still held by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I.
Then in 1792, Adipati Anom Amangku Negara ascended the throne and was titled Sultan Hamengku Buwono II. Pesanggrahan Rejowinangun was also mentioned in Dutch records when J. Greeve who served as the Dutch Governor for eastern Java visited Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono II at Pesanggrahan Rejowinangun in 1791.
The architecture of this Warungboto Site is so unique that many tourists come to take photos in this historical place. The building is also often used for pre-wedding photo sessions or taking pictures for school assignments and so on. In fact, the son and daughter of the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, namely Bobby Nasution and Kahiyang Ayu have done pre-wedding photos at this site in 2017.
The Warungboto site is managed and preserved by the Cultural Heritage Preservation Agency or BPCB DIY. That way, tourists can get helpful information to find out about the history of Warungboto Site.
The existence of Warungboto Site as a tourist destination in Warungboto Village has led to the emergence of community empowerment activities. Therefore, a tourism network group was formed, namely Kampung Wisata Warungboto with the name label Kampung Warto Wisata Warungboto.
