Yogyakarta is indeed known for its interesting tourist destinations, ranging from culture, culinary, fashion, to beaches. One that is already famous is the Tirta Budi natural baths which are better known as the Blue Lagoon baths. These baths have clear and bluish water.
What are the Tirta Budi baths like with their clear blue water? Let’s see the continuation below.
The Origin of Tirta Budi Baths
Initially, Tirta Budi Baths were just dams or embankments made by residents. Then they were beautified as more tourists came. These baths are better known as Blue Lagoon. These baths are hidden under the foot of Mount Merapi.
For decades, the residents of Dalem Village, Widodomartani have lived in abundance of water. Three springs that never dry up have been the mainstay of their lives, Sendang Wadon (daughter), Belik Kluwih and Sendang Lanang (son). The three springs are located in the Kali Tepus river basin. Sendang Wadon, which is a bathing place for women, is in a cubicle and is a small pool. Meanwhile, Belik Kluwih and Sendang Lanang are present in the form of fountains with water coming from the riverbank. The water from Belik Kluwih collects and forms a pool, while Sendang Lanang forms a small pool. This pool is what was eventually nicknamed the Blue Lagoon.
Actually, the official name of this bath is Tirta Budi Baths. However, young people already know it by the name of Blue Lagoon because of its clear and blue water. Although small and very different from the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, this bath is still unique and able to attract the attention of many people. So it is not surprising that this bath is famous throughout Jogja and is crowded with visitors especially on weekends and holidays.
Suhadi, Head of the Blue Lagoon Tourism and Cultural Village Management, explained the history of the Blue Lagoon Tourism and Cultural Village. Initially, many students often bathed in the Tepus River and named this place Blue Lagoon. When photos and stories of this place were widely shared on the internet, residents saw the potential and had the idea to create jobs by creating a tourism village.
The village community was gathered to ask for approval, and residents agreed to form a tourism village management committee. Suhadi was appointed as the Head of the Tourism Village and he submitted a proposal to the Tourism Office.
After the Tourism Office conducted a survey, the tourism village proposal was approved. The community began managing it in September 2014 and it was inaugurated as a tourism village by the Regent of Sleman on March 22, 2015, which also coincided with World Water Day.
The Blue Lagoon Tourism and Cultural Village has developed from a pioneering tourism village to an independent tourism village, and has even received an ISTA (Indonesia Sustainable Tourism Awards) nomination in 2019.

Bathing Atmosphere and Facilities
During the rainy season, this pool will merge with the flow of the Tepus River, causing the blue effect to disappear. However, there is no need to be discouraged, we can still enjoy water tourism here. Just borrow a float and tire rented by the Blue Lagoon Pokdarwis and try sliding from a small dam at the end of the river. Trying massage therapy from a high fountain next to Sendang Lanang is no less interesting. Point your back or other body parts that feel sore and let the gushing water massage us.
Some of the facilities at Blue Lagoon include:
- Baths with Blue-Green Water: The first attraction of Blue Lagoon Jogja is of course the bathing place. The water in the bathing place here is very clear with a blue-green color. The atmosphere is still very beautiful because there are many trees around it.
- Fish Relaxation Place: Camping Ground: Apparently, Blue Lagoon Jogja also provides a place for camping and doing makrab. The camping ground is quite large. So it is suitable if used for makrab or organizational camping.
- Reading House: The next attraction of Blue Lagoon Jogja is the space for reading. For relaxation, or confused about what to do, you can try visiting the reading room. You can borrow books there or bring books from home. The place is also shady and beautiful. So your reading activities will not be disturbed.
- Gazebo and Open Stage: The last attraction of Blue Lagoon Jogja is the open stage and gazebo. There are several gazebos provided for waiting or relaxing. Apart from that, there is also an open stage that can be used as an art event.
That’s all we can say about Blue Lagoon Jogja. Hopefully it is useful.
